Kanda Bongo Man is credited as being one of the pioneers of modern soukous, which is a genre of dance music that originated from African rumba music of the Belgian and French Congo during the 1940s and gained popularity throughout Africa. His music is driven by optimism and happiness. Kanda Bongo Man focuses on sebene, a kind of instrumental bridge typically executed on the electric guitar, as well as call & response during his live shows.
