LAS VEGAS - A total of six non-conference games against California teams and five conference games against NCAA teams from a year ago are the highlights of the 2011 UNLV men's soccer schedule, which was released by the athletics department on Monday.
"This year's schedule is filled with excellent quality from teams on the West Coast," said UNLV head coach Rick Ryerson. "We are taking on five teams from a very strong soccer conference in the Big West, and that will challenge our players to perform at their peak potential every game. We are excited at the prospect of playing not only the best in the West but teams that traditionally are nationally ranked as well.
"In addition our own conference, the MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) was the highest ranked in the West last year, so there is no doubt our league schedule will be as competitive as ever."
The season will begin with three straight games in the state of California, with the season opener coming against Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Aug. 27. The following weekend will see the Rebels play in the Cal State Northridge Tournament, facing the host Matadors on Sept. 1 before closing out against Cal State Fullerton on Sept. 3.
UNLV then returns home for its lone non-conference home games of the 2011 slate. In the UNLV Nike Invitational, the Rebels will take on San Francisco on Sept. 9 and Green Bay on Sept. 11. Then it's back to California for games at UC Riverside (Sept. 16) and UC Irvine (Sept. 23).
The Rebels will begin their quest for the MPSF championship on Oct. 1 with their league opener against division rival New Mexico in Las Vegas. Following that is back-to-back weekends of a pair of games against the other two Mountain Division members, Air Force and Denver. The first two will be played in the state of Colorado (Oct. 7 and 9) and the second pair will be in Las Vegas (Oct. 14 and 16). That will give UNLV a stretch of three games out of five against 2010 NCAA teams, as both New Mexico and Denver played in the postseason event.
On Oct. 21, UNLV will begin a stretch of four straight games against the Pacific Division teams. First up will be road games at Cal State Bakersfield (Oct. 21) and Seattle (Oct. 23). The Rebels will then host San Jose State (Oct. 28) and two-time defending MPSF champion Sacramento State (Oct. 30) in the final home games of the 2011 season. The regular season will end for UNLV in Albuquerque against New Mexico on Nov. 5.
The 2011 MPSF Tournament, in which six of the eight teams in the league will advance to, will be hosted by Denver on Nov. 10-13.
