Get Your Reb On

Hello Rebels Fans,

This is always one of my favorite times of the year to be working in college athletics. School is back in and everyone gets a fresh start to do something special both academically and athletically.

We met with all 475 of our student-athletes - as well as our coaches and some of the department's staff members - on Monday evening in the Thomas & Mack Center. It's incredible to see so many fine young men and women together at one time representing UNLV and this community. We are proud of these Rebels and we hope you are as well. As always, we are committed to growing these young individuals academically, athletically and socially.

As we get started for the new year, I felt it was best to use this opportunity to inform you of the many, many new things our department has been working on to enhance your experience as a UNLV fan. Below is a short list. We hope you like what we have in store.

Fans asked for it and we provided it. UNLV has teamed with ESPN Radio 1100 AM/98.9 FM to provide more pre-game coverage for Rebel home games this season. Coverage will begin 90 minutes before kick-off with ESPN Radio broadcasting live from Sam Boyd Stadium. Rebel play-by-play announcer Jon Sandler will then take over 30 minutes prior to the game for the official pre-game show on the IMG College/Rebel Sports Network.

Family & Friends Night at UNLV Football on Sept. 24
A pre-game kids festival and kids being allowed on the field after the game are highlights of the festivities surrounding the Saturday, Sept. 24 Rebel football game vs. Southern Utah at 6 p.m. Oh, and don't forget the great 2-for-1 Ticket promotion available for the special Family & Friends Night game.

Bobby Hauck Radio Show at Born And Raised

The Bobbie Bowl
Las Vegas loves UNLV head football coach Bobby Hauck and The Bobbie from Capriotti's Sandwich Shop. Find out how the two are linked this year at BobbieBowl.com.

Let's Run
New head coach Dave Rice returns to Runnin' Rebel basketball and brings his up-tempo offense with him this fall. Not new is the talented roster. With 11 returning scholarship players, UNLV will eye the top spot in the Mountain West and another trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Mendenhall Center to open this October

The Mendenhall Center practice facility for the men's basketball team will open giving our current players a place to call home and potential players yet another reason to come be a Runnin' Rebel. A special thank you to the donors who had the vision to build the center. It will forever change UNLV basketball.

New and Improved Rebel Kids Club
We've improved the Rebel Kids Club (RKC) this year, but kept the price the same at just $30 for kids up to 8th grade. Find out more at UNLVKidsClub.com... We already have more than three times as many members this year than last year at the same time. Parents are seeing the value in the RKC!

More Community Involvement than Ever Before
UNLV Athletics is as involved in the Las Vegas community as it has ever been. Director of Community Relations Bridget Byrne - a former Rebel student-athlete - has helped UNLV Athletics establish itself as one of the top community partners in Southern Nevada, with focused efforts on YOUTH READING, YOUTH HEALTH AND WELLNESS and PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT.

Rebel Reading Challenge Celebration - YOUTH READING
The Rebel Reading Challenge - sponsored by SuperPawn - is growing by leaps and bounds. Nearly 10,000 Clark County School District fourth and fifth graders from 40 different elementary schools will compete this year and, for the first time, enjoy a giant kickoff celebration on the campus of UNLV at the Thomas & Mack Center in October.

UNLV coaches step up for Coaches' Challenge - YOUTH HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Through UNLV Athletics' partnership with the Southern Nevada Health District and CCSD, coaches from all 17 UNLV athletic programs will help to support the education of elementary students in the habits of good eating and exercise.

PTA Partnership is about Time - PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
No variable is more important in the success of a child than the involvement of parents or other loved ones who are helping to raise that child. UNLV's relationship with Nevada PTA and the "It's About Time" program encourages parents to simply spend quality time with children. UNLV Athletic events are great opportunities for parents to spend quality time with their children. And, kids are free to all UNLV athletic events, except football and men's basketball.
