Get Your Reb On

Hello Rebels Fans,

We have an important weekend upcoming with our UNLV Football Spring Showcase this Friday at 5 p.m. and a key home series in baseball vs. Air Force (Friday-Sunday). That being said, we wanted to take an opportunity with this edition of "From the Desk of" to focus most of our attention on the absolutely amazing things our student-athletes and coaches have accomplished in the community in recent months. We hope you take the time to read through the "Rebels Around the Valley" newsletter below and are as proud of these young men and women as we are:

UNLV FOOTBALL SPRING SHOWCASE THIS FRIDAY AT 5 P.M. - FREE ADMISSION

The Rebel Football team is set to host its Spring Showcase on campus at Rebel Park this Friday at 5 p.m. Admission is free. Concessions will be available for purchase and fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy a family-friendly evening (which features games and activities for kids). After the showcase, stick around for a free kids’ clinic (ages 6-12) put on by the Rebel football team. For more information on the Spring Showcase, visit UNLVRebels.com.

REBEL BASEBALL FACES AIR FORCE IN KEY HOME SERIES, FRIDAY-SUNDAY

While the UNLV football team takes to the field at Rebel Park on Friday, the baseball team will be in action shortly thereafter at the adjacent Wilson Stadium for the first of a three-game weekend set with Air Force. Tickets to Friday night’s series opener at 6:05 p.m are two-for-one with adult tickets priced at just $8. Kids 12 and under are always free. The 6:05 p.m. start time makes it easy to enjoy the Football Showcase and then make the short walk over to take in a baseball game. But don’t forget, the series continues all weekend long with game two scheduled for 2:05 p.m. on Saturday and game three at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.

FRIDAY NIGHT PARKING UPDATE

For those attending either the UNLV Football Spring Showcase or the Rebel baseball game, please be advised that we are anticipating utilizing multiple parking lots to accommodate fans. Once all lots in the immediate area have filled, fans will be directed to park in the Thomas & Mack Center parking lot. Shuttles will be available to transport those fans to and from the football and baseball fields. Parking attendants and signs will be present day-of-event to ensure fans are able to park in an efficient manner.

UNLV CHEER TEAM CAPTURES NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Congratulations to the UNLV Cheer Group Stunt team on its national championship victory this past weekend at the NCA Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla. The first-place squad included Emily Black, Sara Jordan, Courtni Low and Alex White. I know UNLV Cheer Head Coach Nakia Jackson-Hale was very proud to see the many hours of hard work that they put in since the beginning of the school year pay off.

REBEL READING CHALLENGE TOPS 2.5 MILLION PAGES READ

A staggering 2,509,500 pages were read by valley students during this year’s Rebel Reading Challenge (a 30-day program designed to motivate students to read). The winning 4th and 5th grade classrooms came from Elaine Wynn Elementary and they earned the chance to cheer on the Runnin’ Rebels to victory over Air Force late in the season at the Thomas & Mack Center. Click here to check out their gameday experience. A special thank you to SuperPawn and the CCSD School-Community Partnership for making this program a reality as youth reading, through our community outreach efforts, remains a key area of focus for the department.

OVER 17,000 STUDENTS POSITIVELY IMPACTED BY COACHES CHALLENGE

With youth health and wellness representing another key area of focus, we are pleased to report that the Southern Nevada Health District is honoring UNLV Athletics this month with a "Public Health Hero" award for our involvement with the UNLV Coaches Challenge. The Challenge is a four-week program aimed at motivating 2nd-5th graders to lead healthy, active lifestyles. More than 17,000 students participated this year, and the four winning classrooms are scheduled to receive visits from members of our coaching staff next month. Our coaches and student-athletes continue to positively affect the health and well-being of this wonderful community.

For the Rebels,
